Heather is looking for a new coach. Diego is not prepared to commit to 40 weeks with a young family in Argentina.
I think this may be a blessing in disguise. Heather barring a few bright spells had a disappointing year.
I think the loss to Serena Williams - even though Heather insisted it won't affect her - has had an impact. Of her 994 points that she has got this season, only 210 of those were collected after Wimbledon. I think she did have a couple of standout results, which helped her ranking like her second title win in Hobart. I think she had an OK year, but I wouldn't go as far as saying disappointing.
However, it is definitely the right choice to split from Diego (who I think has been good for Heather) if he is unable to commit full time. I wish him and his family well.
Other than Hobart, Indian Wells and Wimbledon she didn't really have any other good tournaments. Hence why I would say she had a disappointing season and very inconsistent.
Strangely, she didn't actually play that well in Hobart. Watched all her matches and the quality was poor (not surprising so early on in the year) but she did well to come through. She then played well in the US hard courts - good wins against Aga, Giorgi and Georges in Indian Wells, playing really well. Ditto in Miami losing in a tight three setter to Kerber. The serve improved and the backhand crosscourt became a weapon. But then bar the Serena match, not much to write home about.
I hope she picks a new coach quickly. I imagine she'll go with another fairly young ex-ATP player.
Good short term appointment for Heather, and convenient for Judy too with Heather playing Hopman cup with Andy and then Aussie Open and Fed Cup in the next few weeks.
Hopefully this will give heather enough time to get a permanent coach in place, because it's not ideal to be starting the season without that sorted.
I suspect it is only temporary. Judy has lots of other commitments.
Judy is out there anyway and with Hev playing with Andy this week it was a no brainer to start with.
In the Hopman Cup Heather 55 lost to Caroline Garcia (FRA) 34 3-6 7-5 3-6 having beaten her on their two previous meetings. She then beat Daria Gavrilova (AUS) 35 6-7(2) 6-2 7-5 And finally beat Sabine Lisicki (GER) 32 6-3 6-4 (Previous matches between these two went 2-1 to Heather)
Unfortunately they missed out narrowly in the doubles of the pool round to the eventual winners Australia Green.
