Jamie Murray

Has anyone seen this guy play ?

Is he a future prospect in singles or just a doubles specialist ?

He's got a weak forehand and he's not much of an athlete which really lets him down in singles as opponents can exploit that. He's a serve-volleyer and has a really big leftie serve as he's 6ft 3 and he's got a fab sliced serve out wide. Like his brother, he needs to improve his 1st serve consistency but if he does that he could do well.

He's got great hands and touch at the net which is why he's so good at doubles. Even if he doesn't make it at singles, he could make it to the top 100 at doubles if he keeps improving and finds a partner who he can move onto the challenger tour with

Without being disrespectful would we be discussing him if he wasnt Andy's brother? He's got a hell of a lot of other british players above him.

One reason for discussing him is that he is playing in the Aberdeen Cup against your lad Dave Sherwood!

The Aberdeen Cup program rather poorly listed hi mas the British No 34 !!!!!! But the way he played I reckon he got the most out of the weekend. Outplayed both Andy and Sherwood in the doubles by miles.........no way should he be 900 ranked in singles....he will get better !

Wouldnt disagree that he was the best player in the doubles, but then he had the highest ranking in the doubles too, so should we be suprised?

I do agree that he has got potential to improve his singles ranking, but still stand by my initial comment that there are 33 players ranked above him in singles so the reason he was at aberdeen and that we are discussing him here is that he is andy murray's brother. But yes he did show enough to suggest we may one day be discussing him in his own right.

I agree that Jamie was the one to benefit most from the weekend. This really would have improved his confidence after some poor losses recently and a rather unsuccessful year. He now knows he can compete with someone like Sherwood but the question remains, will he now put in the hard slog necessary to move him up the rankings. He deserves a Wimbledon wildcard but who will his partner be ? Colin Fleming's likely to be playing challenger qualies and main draw challengers next year so he won't be playing the same tournaments as Jamie. Hopefully, Jamie can build a new partnership with Ross Hutchins and continue the success they've had initially. I fully expect to see Jamie in the doubles top 100 by the end of 2006

I've spoken to one of Colin's friends and I asked him about Jamie Murray. I mentioned that his forehand seemed his big weakness along with his serve needing more pace and that his backhand seemed to be his strongest shot. He said:

"I'm surprised you thought that his backhand is his strongest shot - in the singles game, this is the area where opponents attack him. Also although he doesnt have the strongest serve, it is a heavily swinging leftie serve that is a nightmare to return - well suited to serve and volley play."

After the GB satellite Colin and Jamie Murray are going for the Wolfsburg 25K + H Challenger from Feb 27th-5th March. They're both going to play singles qualies and doubles main draw. Colin says that they need to start playing more challengers now and the Wrexham Challenger success has given them confidence that they can now succeed at that level

Great news....looking forward to it. Really think thay can do well in doubles. Just hope the extra training / fitness they are looking for in their singles pays off !

The medium term goal of both Fleming and J Murray is to get into the Davis Cup squad and play doubles together. I think the April tie may come a little too soon for them to be picked but by September they should both be top 100 doubles and Britain will have a top-class doubles pair for the world-group tie.

I'd like to see Bates pick Fleming/Murray for the doubles tie in April as with Rusedski and A Murray in the singles having to already play 2 rubbers each, it would rest them before the crucial reverse singles rubbers.

Bates will have quite a decision to make for the remaining 2 spots in the team, he has to choose from Fleming, J Murray, Bogdanovic and Baker, who would you choose ?

I think a lot of their success so far this year has been helped by all the extra fitness and gym work they've done over the winter. That has really paid off as has the use of a nutrionist at Stirling in devising high-protein diets for both players to build up their muscles or "guns" as the players say. As a result Colin's serve speed has increased a lot - he says he's serving "bombs".

I wonder whether Colin and Jamie will stay in Europe and play more challengers after Wolfsburg, in Britain he gets fed up with playing the same guys week after week but on the other hand, he's not a good traveller

Just discovered this board goes back at least 12 years...brilliant:

"Even if he doesn't make it at singles, he could make it to the top 100 at doubles if he keeps improving and finds a partner who he can move onto the challenger tour with"

In moments of extreme boredom Itoo  have occasionally looked at some of the really old posts  - with the benefit of hindsight some can really be entertaining/amusing!

BTW...maybe the mods should move this thread to our snazzy new Individual Player section

Moved. It's very interesting to read this 12 years on - the posters weren't far off and I wonder what happened to SteveP - very accurate assessment of the reasons for Jamie's doubles prowess and singles lack thereof.

Just reading the MTF doubles thread and one or two (presumably uninformed) folks speculating that Jamie and Bruno will or should probably split, but lack of available top partners may get in the way - wondered what folks on here thought about Jamie and Bruno as a pairing? First year it was a massive success, but it seems to have not really developed this season and not sure they are getting the most of the pairings potential. If not Soares, anyone have any thoughts on who a good partner for Jamie might/could be next season? Or is it all tittle tattle and I should stop rumour mongering!
