Laver Cup

This looks interesting:

http://lavercup.com/#captains

A Ryder Cup style weekend event. Teams of 6 Europe vs Rest of the World. 4 players selected automatically by ranking and two wildcard picks by the captains (bjorg & mcenroe).

Hosted in Europe one year then USA the next. Scheduled for the weekend after the US Open final.

Based on rankings of today it would be:

Murray, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Monfils, Nadal, Federer

vs

Raonic, Nishikori, Kyrgios, Isner, Del Potro? Kevin Anderson?

Wow Europe really dominate the rankings at the moment.

It's a bit pointless at the moment given the disparity between the two teams although I am sure some of the big names will withdraw

For me this is just a pointless gimmick of a "tournament". The players already play too much tennis, and many of the top players have already opted (or been forced) out of Davis Cup next week through fatigue and injury.

Whilst the team sheets look exciting on paper, when push comes to shove, we could easily end up with players outside the top 100 competing, just to make up the numbers - unless of course the appearance money is too good to turn down.

The tennis itself could easily turn into a glorified exhibition tournament.

Sounds to me like a promoter's idea of making an easy profit

Is this the thing Federer wanted to set up?

I think most people agree that the Davis Cup being an annual event doesn't work, look at this year for example. Until that moves to a better format there will always be rival products offered such as this. Maybe we could host the Davis Cup alternate years to something like this. I also think the Davis Cup should be more than the efforts of potentially just 3 players per match.

Good stuff. The top players get the chance to play so little and earn such paltry amounts.

Well, it was a big success.

Very slick. Exciting. Build up of excitement with the increase in points. No dead rubbers.

Lots of interesting points for the Davis Cup people and ATP people to think about, when they were all so sniffy.....

It looked really good - I like innovation when it means something and this appeared to mean something. Nick K appeared more distressed losing to Fed in the last match than he did losing his DC semi last weekend - food for thought indeed!

I am sure there are flaws to iron out before they go again next season in Chicago but a good start

I think each memeber of the winning team were to gain $250k. Not bad for a weekends work. Can see this being a big thing in the tennis calendar.

I thought it was a superb event myself. So different to anything else! Can see it being a real regular thing now.

I see that the Laver Cup is now becoming officially part of the ATP tour

Is this a big feather in Federer's cap? And by association, a lack of feather in Novak's (who couldn't get his event to work) ????

Good move, it's a good event the laver cup , still not sure why they are doing the ATP nations cup though, that makes no sense.
