Must be a lot of pressure for Emily. She may feel that she really needs to step it up this season. Hope for her she can deal with it all and in time push on.

Yes, was thinking that too. It's still very early days but some of her first performances have been encouraging as she has definitely been more competitive against better players. She obviously loves playing, so hope she stays fit and healthy and can indeed make progress this season.

I must admit that I have not looked at Emily's career at all until recently. In the world junior top 20 from 2001 onwards we have only 6 players who have made the lists. The best year was 2008 because it included  Laura, Heather and Jo. Heather also made the list in 2009, followed by Katie Swan in 2015 and Jodie Anna Burrage  in 2016. The sixth player was Emily who made the list in both 2016 and 2017.   Her father was Mike Appleton(an ex player) and as a Sky Scholar in 2017 she  was receiving advice from Greg Rusedski and Annabel Croft. At the time she was talking about reaching the top 100. Yet if you look at her record now apart from 2 matches won in 2015 and 2016 she has never won any matches beyond $15k  tournaments. As she was a highly ranked junior in world terms what are the reasons thus far to translate to success at senior level?

Some of the key factors are what you achieve when and how. Emily pushed through into the top 20 at the end of her penultimate year, when most of her contemporaries had more or less stopped playing Juniors.  Her success was also achieved  by playing a lot of tournaments, some of them relatively weak, which gives a misleading impression of long-term capability.  Junior success in Grade A events at a young age correlates well to Pro success, but accumulation at a later stage in weaker events doesn't

There are incidentally other Brits who reached top 20 and indeed top 10 (like Katie Boulter and Katy Dunne), but during the year rather than at the end.

Given the new rules she'll have to protect her WTA ranking and have an ITF ranking to get into 25k qualies.

Either way she'll have to win some mattches at 25k level.

Should be interesting smile

A red faced Emily with her latest missive from the jungle. A lovely looking beach there.

In agreement with David C, she was perfectly placed to go into American College tennis. Which would have been a great fit for her from a  development perspective. Although it is difficult to be absolutely precise in terms of predicting transition ie. Harriet Dart has done much better than one would have anticipated but is still short of making the top 100, one gets a good idea from how much tennis and support relative to rank a junior player plays. I dont think you can criticise someone for making the most of the resources available to them but taking an unbiased paternalistic view she would have got some fantastic but different opportunities going the college route and still been really pushed on the tennis front in either the PAC 12 or SEC. I expect her to be out performed by Eden Richardson and Paul Jubb in the summer when they get some holiday wildcards.

Emma R may never have a top 10 junior ranking, but peak at 20 having just turned 16, she was only really dominated by one contemporary Clara  Tauson WTA 408 both will only play warm ups and junior slams if any junior events at all from here on in.

Emily on her luggage woes. Her bags turned up a week later... But this was the first W25 MD match she won, on borrowed shoes and equipment.

Someone on TF posted that Emily's mother has a blog which seems quite interesting.
