Naomi Osaka

I'm not sure that impugning Ms Osaka's intelligence is entirely necessary.

Why? If people want to know what she is thinking, then surely telling them via a documentary is a good thing.

... or do people only want the immediate post-match "what does it feel like" answers?

But answer interview questions as part of being a professional tennis player, the profession that has put her in a position that anyone cares about her documentary, heck no.

Sorry but that's part of it all and will no doubt continue to be, including some silly questions, some challenging questions, the raft, at least largely as at present. So I do hope Naomi can sort herself out with good support and is back competing and interviewing. Women's tennis would be much the better for that.

She wants them to know what she is thinking by appearing on the front cover of Vogue? Or the Nike photoshoots and/or the (Likely) large sum she would have got for the documentary? A lot of people won't like these three words but meh, it's a little bit "attention seeking snowflake" for me.

It's very believable. Ms. Osaka is perfectly happy dealing with the media as long as it on her terms. She doesn't want to be asked awkward questions by journalists after matches.

I don't want to pay taxes in life, maybe if I cry and perform a sit down protest at work they'll take it easy on me in jail?

What is the benefit of answering "awkward" questions? ... or, indeed, of asking them? Surely she is a tennis player, and the questions should be about this (as the session is "required" by the tennis authorities) - there isn't much room for questions to be both relevant and awkward.

Can anyone give an example of a relevant question that could elicit an illuminating answer? ... or an "awkward" question that is relevant?

... and why would we be pleased by someone's ability to fence with journalists?

In football press conferences are similarly unilluminating: Does anyone remember anything about the recent Cristiano Ronaldo presser other than "Agua"?

Andy Murray is getting praise elsewhere for defending one of our young players from questions from "the press" because they refuse to restrict themselves to the relevant (or even the humane); I have no idea how encouraging Piers-whoever and his ilk, by making them believe that they have the God-given right to be arrogant and judgmental, is good for anything other than the press-people themselves and the prurient.

If a tennis player wants to tell us about themselves in an interview, documentary, podcast, or even social media we generally heartily approve - unless (apparently) that person has refused to do a press conference, in which case they are characterised as slow-witted, or as badly managed, or as bad for the sport.

Rosa Parks didn't want to sit at the back of the bus.

Yes, but Rosa didn't then charter her own bus and sit in the back of that one

(Anyway, it wasn't sitting in the back, it was refusing to stand up, no?)

"The humane questions" bit of an overexaggeration no? Not sure Rafa's been asked the size of his pecker or not yet.

I'd say it's more to do with she doesn't like having to talk about matches after losing, which is understandable and no athlete wants to do this, but they all have to, as part of the sport. She can take the fines and the punishment if/when she doesn't and stop thinking herself above and beyond every other athlete, because she has made herself the highest paid female athlete in the world via the media, so its very hypocritical, when people move beyond the current "woke" mentality and see things for how/what they currently are. She appears to be having her cake and eating it several times over.

Yes CD, not vacating herv"coloured" seat when the "white" section was full was the incident that brought her to atttention. Though no doubt she was unhappy about segregation in general.

Whatever, a pretty OTT analogy. We're into civil riights are we? the protection of those that don't fancy doing interviews and PCs that are a normal part of professional tennis?

Whether folk feel they are ever interesting or not, illuminating or not, they're not going to stop anytime soon. So Naomi and her team need to deal with that and focus on how and when she will be in a position to resume her tennis career, assuming she wants to.
