After two titles at W35 level in Roehampton, Sonay is now:
WTA 175 (CH)
And still the second title points to be added. Now live ranked 162 and, while she may be passesd by one or two before next Monday, it will certainly be a further CH
Sonay needs to start trying some higher catorgary tournaments now.
Well, she will have US Open qualifying next week. And, as said elsewhere, her recent W35 title points have ensured that she will maintain top 200 for the rest of the year, thus ensuring Aus Open Q entry and giving her rankings protection if she steps up to a tougher schedule post the US Open. Not a bad position to be in when a few months ago she thought that she would be hardly able to play the rest of the year.
It will be interesting to see where she plays over the next few months.
Sonay Kartal, age 19, has just won the ITF 15 title in Turkey, and deserves her own thread.
A promising youngster, who played a lot against/with Emma Raducanu as a tiddler and young teenager, she's had a few injuries issues and, for whatever reason, didn't travel abroad to try and garner points during lockdown, preferring to play mainly UK Pro League tennis in the UK. Which she did very successfully.
Now, spreading her wings, she made it to Turkey and was runner-up in week 1, before going a step further to take the title in week 2.
A gifted ball striker, who's been a little fave for a long time, Sonay is not the tallest player, which doesn't help (especially for serving), and hates going forward to the net. But she's dynamic, with a very interesting forehand, with a lot of whip and racket-head speed, difficult to read where it's going.
She said herself recently in the Brighton & Hove Independent that she's trying to play more aggressively - in fact, the UK Pro event forced her to, as she wasn't doing as well as she wanted, especially in tie-breaks, at the start. And it's paying dividends.
Im left handed for writing and things like cutting with scissors. But played all racket sports right handed and generally anything requiring more strength , its right handed.
Its not that unusual, I dont think, to have a different hand for different types of things
