IMO if Emma continues to improve and move up the rankings over the next few weeks, the general public may be very confused and potentially upset as to why she isnt playing at the Olympics. TBH, despite Katies endeavours, it is Emma who most of the British public know about. Think it will need to be very clearly explained as to the selection processNot much chance of that!
So I'll put my neck on the line, but happy for it to be torn apart if wrong. I think the list of gold medalists and grand slam winners not a direct entry on current ranking are Kerber, Osaka, Kenin, Stephens, Wozniacki, Radacanu, Andreescu, Halep and Bencic. Halep isn't high enough ranked to be considered. Bencic is on maternity leave. Kerber, Osaka and Andreescu may be accepted directly on their SR. Kenin and Stephens cannot be selected as that would push USA over the 4 singles player quota. Leaving, unless I've missed someone, Wozniacki and Emma to have the 2 places but it's dependent on Kerber, Osaka and possibly Andreescu being accepted directly on their SR.
The ITF have included Osaka on the list of eligible players that can be selected for singles. It isn't clear from the reports whether that is because of her special ranking or because of being a former Grand Slam winner. The reports mention both but being a GS winner becomes irrelevant if she's eligible on her SR.
"The International Tennis Federation cleared her to compete in Paris by awarding her a special ranking for players who have been away from the tour, the JTA said. She also qualifies as a former Grand Slam winner, the JTA said."
There have clearly been things lost in translation. The ITF don't award a SR but they would have had to give her an exemption for not meeting the eligibility criteria of having represented Japan in the BJK Cup twice during the qualifying period. I wonder if that's what they mean by cleared by awarding a special ranking?
A very confused article. Osaka would be eligible to use her Special Ranking, but can also receive an ITF Place. We'll find out in due course which she used.
Japanese sites make it clearer. Osaka could choose whether to enter using her special ranking or the ITF quota. She has chosen to enter using the ITF quota. So Emma is almost certainly not going to get an ITF quota place.
There was misreporting. Osaka ended up using a Special Ranking.

I dont think its is a bad decision for Emma. Shes currently 165 in the world. The Olympics has no ranking points. Taking part in the wta 500 & 1000 during the Olympics may allow her back into the top 100 and direct entry to the Australian open.

Stick my neck on the line here, but I think she might be after a seeding for the AO!
I dont fully know how the number of players rules work, but did Emma turning down open the opportunity for Maia/Harriet to go? Very cool achievement for both, and Harriet will have a half chance of a late on-site 'im in the doubles' alternate spot in the singles from late withdrawals, there were quite a few in London and Rio (Tokyo slightly different for obvious reasons).

Nations can nominate up to six players per gender, so Emma not accepting made no difference. Am not sure Harriet and Maia will get into doubles with a combined ranking of 167. The Tokyo cut-off for first 24 pairs was 97, after which priority would go to pairs with singles players.
Harriet would need to qualify for doubles to be an onsite alternate for singles.
Putting a positive spin on it, Tokyo bronze medallists Pigossi and Stefani were a late doubles-only acceptance with a combined ranking of 213. So all bets are off.
It's extraordinary when there are four ATP events that week with a 500 event in Hamburg.
I dont think Hamburg list is out yet, be interesting to see how it compares. Not sure of rules, but presumably Bastad can pay appearamce money to the big names, not sure of Hamburg as a 500 is allowed or does pay?
Bastad is incredibly pretty venue and place though so has a non financial appeal as well, perhaps!
If Andy decides not to play the Olympics, will he have taken a place of someone in the squad?
I realise no one else could have taken his singles slot but if he had said "no" at this point, could the doubles slot have been filled by either of the other singles players (Cam or Jack who have a better singles ranking than Andy and therefore better entry level for doubles, I think?) or by a doubles specialist to play with Dan - ie any of Jamie, Julian, Henry or Lloyd?
I guess I am saying, given he appears still uncertain about playing, is it too late to swap when or if he pulls out and is he potentially stopping someone else playing who might really cherish the opportunity?
And therefore, if he is, then presumably we should assume Andy will play singles and doubles and isnt being selfish at this point...
As for mixed, does Joe and Heather seem the most likely pairing now? Any other combo of the players picked look a potential option - presumably would have to be Joe + or Neal +?

Well Andy will be in good company. Apart from our Emma, Aryna Sabalenka and Ons have both announced they wont be taking part in the Olympics due to the potential strain on their bodies ahead of the hard court swing, given the transitioning between playing surfaces.
