That's a strong team - but they are in a strong pool too
The girls U18 team is:
Flora, Allegra, Isabella Wong
Almost feels like our under 16 team is stronger than our 18s - or am I wrong?
Yes but no World Finals to aim for.
As CD implies it is common for under 16 girls teams to be stronger that the under 18s, as teams try to qualify for the Junior Billie Jean King Cup. For example the top Slovakian Mia Pohankova (beat Hannah at Roland Garros) has been selected for their under 16 team rather than under 18 - and they are potential opposition for us in the under 16 qualifying group, as well as the Czech Republic
The under 12s are in a qualifying round robin group with Georgia, France and Ireland. Our first match today was against Georgia, and we currently lead 1-0. Ginny Chen won 6-4 6-3, with Dasha Jones and Sophia Cunninghame making up the team.
Dasha won 6-0 6-1 and Ginny/Sophia 6-0 6-3 to complete a comfortable 3-0 win against Georgia. France were equally untroubled against Ireland, so today's scheduled match against France (yet to start) looks set to determine top place in the group.
In a match split over 2 days France beat our under 12s 2-1 (Ginny won 6-4 3-6 6-3, Dasha lost 5-7 2-6 and Ginny/Sophia lost 2-6 6-7(8)) Today's matches are under way with GBR 1-0 up against Ireland and France 1-0 up against Georgia. Assuming that GBR and France win then our girls will face the winner of Group A (Estonia or Turkey, currently playing) tomorrow, to determine who qualifies for the finals in August
The under 12s duly beat Ireland 3-0 (straight sets wins for Sophia and Ginny, backed up by doubles success for Sophia/Dasha) means they play Estonia tomorrow (winners of group A) for finals qualification
Two easy wins today for Mika and Hannah against Denmark
Austria and the Czech Rep in our group have also secured wins just from the singles
Slovakia v Slovenia (US politicians' worst nightmare) has only got one singles result up
This refers to the under 16 qualifying. To reach next week's European finals (wit qualification for the Junior BJK Cup at stake) they need to win 2 matches. Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic and Hollie Smart form the team. Today saw a 3-0 win over Denmark (Mika 6-0 6-4, Hannah 6-0 6-2 and Hollie/Mika 4-6 6-2 [10-5]). Tomorrow they play 4th seeds Austria, whose number 1 Lilli Tagger is JWR52, but their other two players do not appear to be at the same level. The Czech Republic are thankfully on the opposite side of the draw.
Disappointment for the under 18 squad who lost their opening match so cannot qualify for their final. They played Portugal, whose number 1 is ranked around 700 WTA. Allegra Korpanec Davies lost a marathon 3 setter against the Portugal number 3, before Flora Johnson lost to their top player 5-7 7-5 6-1. They gained some consolation in the doubles, won 4-0 4-2 by Allegra in partnership with Isabella Wong
Surely GB are favourites in their U16 match against Austria (whose highest ranked player is lower than Hannah)?

Yes, but you've got to remember this is on clay - both Hannah and Mika are far weaker on clay than other surfaces so their rankings aren't correct for clay
