Boys & Girls: J30 Liverpool, Great Britain - hard (week 45)

Thanks, paulisi

Certainly a big result for 14 year-old Lucy to beat the 7th seed with the big serve

Also, on paper, a big result for unseeded Isabelle Britton to beat the 6th seed, Celine Ricaud (but although I like her 'Frenchness' , I can never root for Celine while she still has that awful grip and action on her forehand)

Fran Tye and Abi Redman are 17 years old, so that's prety old for a J30

Just to complete, Annabel Wong did indeed beat Karina Kiss

So the girls QFs are:

Eloise v Isabelle B
Fran Tye v Annabel
Lucy Bear v Isabella Moss
Nehir (TUR) v Abi

Brennan Foster (qualifier) did a grand job in beating the Italian 6th seed
Young Scott Watson also beat Felix B-Evans pretty easily

So the boys QFs are:

Harry Abel v Brennan
Joe Maz. v Enrico Franchi
Rafe Samuel v Max (AUT)
Ellison Minnaar v Scott

Didn't see too much of the boys matches as I went next door to the athletics to help out, however I did see Rafa Samuel win very comfortably and the start of Brennan Foster was lively with an argument over a call and a code violation. However Brenna is quite talented and he came through qualifying.
In the girls, Eloise big serve was the key. I think she got to double figures in aces against a very useful Gracie, who I've never seen before until this week.
Isabelle continued her strong form with a very solid performance in a good match against Celine.
Daisy made far too many errors and punished by Fran who was very solid again.
Nehir was very lucky to get through as Sophie J was a break up in the final set and well on top, when she twisted her ankle and had to retire. Sophie injury meant a walkover for Daphne and Katie Randall, so Katie gets her first ranking point....
Isabelle Moss continues to impress playing solid tennis against an out of sorts Emilijia
Didn't see much of the Lucy v Sofia match other than Lucy won courtesy of a double fault.Sofis has nort really come on since I last saw her and is so reliant on the big serve firing.
Abi Redman only lives down the road. She has a big serve and big forehand, but is now a lot more consistent than she has been in the past.
Karina Kiss was very inconsistent in both matches this week and Annabel was too strong.

I expect the top match to be tight, but Fran, Isabelle M and Nehir should come through.

Good win for Scott, I didn't expect that result.

Hardly saw any of the TE, but did watch Fred F in a very long match. Both him and his opponent were very small, but capable. Fred is obviously at Reed as Ben Haran was watching as was Chris Wilkinson

Unless the rules have changed, theres no ranking points awarded for a first round walkover

Yes, Fred has recently joined Reeds. Until then he was at Bath RPDC

31. Allocation of Points
Ranking points for each tournament grade are as set out below. Please refer to Appendices A, B
and C for special regulations for J500 tournaments, Regional Championships and ITF Junior Team
Competitions.
No Main Draw points will be awarded to a player until he/she has played and won a round in the
Main Draw. Advancement through a bye in the first match will not be equivalent to winning a
round. Advancement by virtue of walkover, or by retirement following the commencement of a
match, will be equivalent to winning a round. An abandoned tournament counts as a tournament
played if the player had not withdrawn before the decision to abandon was taken.

Wins for Rafe Samuel and Scott Watson. The first set of Scott's match was high quality and Ellison totally lost his rhythm and Scott won comfortably.
Annabel has beaten Fran very easily. As predicted Isabelle Britton and Eloise Newbury are into a third.
Abi Redman is a set up on Nehir and Lucy is a break up in the first set.
Harry Abel is 5-0 down in the opener and the other match is just starting.

Eloise ran away with the third set.
Abi Redman won easily against a very disappointing performance from Nehir.
Lucy won in straight sets frustrating Isabelle Moss by getting a lot of balls back in court.
Harry Abel lost in three against Brennan Foster, who looks a very decent player and Joe Mazingham won by retirement as his opponent injured his shoulder.

There were wins in the doubles for Tinsley/Caesar - I don't think Caesar had any points coming into this tournament.
The Italians look a good outfit and came through in the boys as did Ollie Knight & Felix

The rest of the doubles is still going on.

In the TE there was a very long match between Foley and Cunninghame, with Cunninghame sneaking through in 3 and it was a decent quality match.
I wasn't particularly impressed with the standards in the girls and the taller/older girls tended to win.  Grace Watson won, but had to work hard.

Yes thats definitely changed then. Not sure how I feel about it, seems a bit unfair. LTA still dont count walkovers for ranking points if they are in the first round (unless the player wins their next match) You have to win at least 1 match in a main draw to get lta ranking points

I didnt know about this new rule. Its quite unfair to be honest as

for someone to get their first points (unless WC for main draw) they usual is having to win 3 matches to qualify and then a main draw match. Just to get points on beinf luck to get a walkover seems wrong

That's been the wording of the rule since 2018.

Oh heck - being honest, regardless of timings, its still perfectly valid not to like the ruling, and i agree with you, walkovers shouldnt get ranking points for a first round walkover; its no different to a bye. I cant recall, but Im sure ATP wont reward a walkover like that in round one; do the ITF in futures events?

anyway, dont not comment ever again, its a long time to stay silent and very boring!

No offence was intended. I thought I was being helpful to the conversation.

Please do keep commenting. You offer great insights that this forum would be much worse without. I'm sure folk would rather hear from you more than me.

I might need to put a poll up to test that
